Ledger Setup Guide

Welcome to Your Secure Crypto Journey

Setting up a hardware wallet is one of the most important actions you can take to protect your cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and other blockchain-based assets from theft, hacks, and unauthorized access.

Step 1

1. Unbox & Authenticate Your Device

When you open your package, ensure that all items are present and in perfect condition. Your box should contain the hardware wallet device, a USB cable, documentation, and blank recovery phrase cards.

Critical Security Alert: Your recovery phrase should NEVER be pre-written. If you see a filled-out card or someone gave you a phrase to "use with the device," do not proceed. This is a common scam designed to drain your assets.

While Ledger devices do not use tamper-evident seals, they use internal secure architecture to prevent unauthorized modifications. Still, if anything appears unusual—scratches, marks, or already-written recovery cards—stop and contact support.

Step 2

2. Power On the Device & Begin Setup

Connect the device via the included USB cable. Once it powers on, you will be guided through the initial menu and asked to choose between creating a new wallet or restoring an existing one.

Create a New Wallet

This option generates an entirely new set of private keys and a recovery phrase known only to you. The private keys never leave the device, ensuring maximum protection even if your computer is compromised.

Restore an Existing Wallet

You may restore a wallet if you already have a valid 12- or 24-word recovery phrase. The phrase is entered directly onto the device, never into your phone or computer.

Step 3

3. Set Up a PIN Code

Your PIN code works like the lock screen for your wallet. It protects the device against unauthorized physical access. Choose a PIN that is not easily guessable and not used anywhere else.

Security Tip: If an incorrect PIN is entered too many times, the device automatically resets, helping protect you in case of theft or loss.
Step 4

4. Secure Your Recovery Phrase

Your device will show a recovery phrase consisting of 24 words (sometimes 12 depending on model and settings). This phrase is the single most important element of your wallet's security model. Think of it as the keys to a digital vault.

Write these words down on the provided cards, carefully and clearly. Double-check the spelling and order. Keep copies in separate secure locations to protect against fire, water, or physical damage.

Critical Warnings About Your Recovery Phrase:
  • Never take photos of it
  • Never type it into a phone or computer
  • Never upload it to cloud storage or messaging apps
  • No employee or support agent will ever ask for it
  • No website or app should ever request it

If your device is ever lost, damaged, or stolen, the recovery phrase is the only way to restore your assets. Without it, there is no way to recover your crypto.

Step 5

5. Install the Official Companion App

After securing your recovery phrase, download the official companion app recommended for your device. This application allows you to manage your assets, install blockchain apps, verify transactions, and keep your device updated.

Important: Only download from verified sources to avoid fake or malicious software.
Step 6

6. Connect Your Hardware Wallet

Open the app and connect your device via USB or Bluetooth (depending on the model). You'll be guided through a brief security check that confirms your device is genuine.

Connection Steps

  1. 1Open the companion app
  2. 2Connect your device and unlock it with your PIN
  3. 3Complete the identity verification step
Step 7

7. Install Blockchain Applications

Your device supports a variety of blockchains, but each must be manually installed based on your needs. This modular approach keeps your device clean and efficient while allowing you to install only what you plan to use.

Supported Blockchains

Bitcoin (BTC)
Ethereum (ETH)
Solana (SOL)
Ripple (XRP)
Polygon (MATIC)
Litecoin (LTC)
And dozens more

After installing the necessary app for a specific network, you'll be able to create accounts for that network directly within your companion app.

Step 8

8. Add Accounts in the Companion App

Inside the application, look for the option to "Add Account." Each blockchain account corresponds to an app you installed earlier.

Account Creation Process

  1. 1Select the blockchain (e.g., Bitcoin or Ethereum)
  2. 2Select "Add Account," then follow the prompts while your device is connected
  3. 3Approve the account creation on your device. This ensures the address is generated securely

Once added, your account will appear in your dashboard, ready for deposits and portfolio management.

Step 9

9. Receiving Crypto Safely

To receive assets, open the app and select "Receive." Your device will display the address on its secure screen. Always compare the address on the device with the one shown in the app—this protects you from clipboard hijacking malware.

Security Check: Always verify the displayed address on your device matches the one in the app before sharing it with others.

Receiving Process

  1. 1Choose the asset and the account you want to receive into
  2. 2Connect and unlock your device
  3. 3Verify the displayed address on your device. If the address matches, you can safely use it
  4. 4Copy the address or scan the QR code
Step 10

10. Sending Crypto Securely

When you send crypto from your account, your device ensures the transaction is authorized by requiring physical confirmation. This means even if your computer is compromised, the attacker can't move your funds without access to your hardware wallet.

Sending Process

  1. 1Select the account you want to send from
  2. 2Enter the destination address and amount
  3. 3Review network fees and estimated confirmation time
  4. 4Confirm all details on your device's secure screen before approving the transaction
Step 11

11. Firmware Updates

Occasionally, firmware updates will be released to improve performance, strengthen security, or add new features. Updating through the companion app ensures the process is secure and authenticated.

Important: You will never need your recovery phrase during a normal firmware update, and you should never enter your phrase into your computer or phone for any part of the updating process.
Step 12

12. Best Practices for Security

Security Best Practices

  • Use a fireproof safe or metal backup for your recovery phrase
  • Never share your PIN or recovery phrase
  • Beware of phishing emails, fake websites, and fake apps
  • Always verify URLs and ensure you're using the correct official domains
  • Keep your companion app updated to the latest version
  • Do not lend your device to anyone
Step 13

13. Ready to Explore

With your Ledger device fully set up and your recovery phrase safely stored, you now have one of the strongest layers of protection available for digital assets. You have full control of your private keys, meaning only you decide what happens to your crypto.
